(Kanata, Canada) Friday, February 26, 2010 - The Cameron Smith Memorial Fund, a Kanata-based non-profit organization supported by the SohoPortal Community Initiative Program, was awarded the 2010 Kanata Chamber of Commerce People's Choice Award for Community Support - Non Profit Organization of the Year Award (Kanata). Earlier this week, it was also announced that the Fund had reached its fundraising goal of $100,000.
As a registered non-profit organization, the Cameron Smith Memorial Fund has been raising monies since 2005 to assist disadvantaged bantam aged youth play minor hockey. Interest earned on capital held in the Fund is being allocated to provide financial bursaries to help disadvantaged, Bantam-aged male and female local hockey players. By disbursing payments using only the interest earned by the fund, the objective is to ensure the Fund remains intact as a lasting tribute and legacy to Cameron and the values of Community and Friendship for which he was so well known.
"It takes a special group of volunteers & sponsors, to run an initiative of this magnitude", stated Garry Brownrigg, Chairperson of the Cameron Smith Memorial Fund & President of SohoPortal.com. "The Smith Family and Committee Members feel truly fortunate and are incredibly appreciative of the support our community has shown for Cameron’s cause. We would not be we are today, without your generosity & support. Thank you!"
